The Art of Sanitizing or DIY HAND SANITIZER (ABOVE 80% ABV)

As situation is escalating like never before, we want you to be safe, informed and aware. As you might know, there are not many hand sanitizers available in neither retail, nor online stores. However, there are still resources available to DIY one to help you stay safe.

We’d like to share with you this simple recipe on how you can make a hand sanitizer that is strong, effective, feels and smells good. This DIY hand sanitizer recipe is above 80% ABV, which is higher than the 60% ethanol recommended by CDC and requires 4 ingredients easily accessible and available for purchase.

WHAT

  • 22 oz. neutral grain alcohol at 96% ABV

  • 5 Tbsp of water (chilled)

  • 5 Tbsp of coconut oil

  • 2 Tbsp of Hydrogen Peroxide

  • 1 Tsp of Essential oil of choice (optional)

HOW

  • Add Peroxide and oil/s into the alcohol, then add water.

  • Close the bottle, shake well, let it sit for 48-72 hours

  • Pour into an empty hand sanitizer bottle, travel size bottles or these little spray bottles

  • Note that water is very important in the proportions provided as it plays an essential role in oil dissolving process.

  • Here are some nice essential oils we recommend: lemongrass, eucalyptus, rose hip

WHERE

This one is very important. Unfortunately, 96% ABV grain alcohol is not available for purchase in Cook County. However, it can be purchased in other counties. If you have a vehicle or friends and family who live outside Cook County, take advantage of the opportunity of the resources available to you, get a bottle of 96% ABV or 192 Proof and make a hand sanitizer for them or share this recipe to return a favor.

This DIY Hand sanitizer recipe is stronger than most hand sanitizers available and exceeding the CDC recommended strength. Shake well. before each use and close tight, so alcohol doesn’t evaporate. Coconut oil will assist on the moisturizing mission and essential oils will certainly enhance your user experience by making your hands not only feel but smell nice. Safety is a priority but a little bit of joy is so needed today!

See CDC Official Website for other precautionary measures, recipes and proportions for house disinfection, and remember to wash your hands in accordance with their instructions.

Stay safe, stay informed, stay positive! (Sincerely, Art Room Events)
